What is Imatinib Mesylate?
Imatinib is a Kinase Inhibitor. The mechanism of action of imatinib is as a Protein Kinase Inhibitor.
Imatinib, sold under the brand names Gleevec among others, is a chemotherapy medication used to treat cancer. Specifically, it is used for chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) and acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) that is Philadelphia chromosome-positive (Ph+) and certain types of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), systemic mastocytosis, and myelodysplastic syndrome. It is taken by mouth.
Imatinib can be used for the treatment of the chronic myelogenous leukemia (abbreviated CML) of positive symptoms of Philadelphia chromosome (Ber-Abl). It is suitable for being applied to adult patients in acute transformation phase, accelerated phase, and chronic phase with treatment failure with interferon.
