Benzoic acid is commonly used as a drug or preservative. It can inhibit the growth of fungi, bacteria and mold. It is usually applied to the skin to treat ringworm skin diseases. Used in synthetic fiber, resin, paint, rubber, tobacco industry. Benzoic acid was originally made by retorting gum benzoin or hydrolysis of alkali water, and can also be made by hydrolysis of hippuric acid. Benzoic acid is produced by oxidizing with air in the presence of cobalt, manganese and other catalysts. Or carboxylated from Benzoic acid and its sodium salt can be used as bacteriostatic agent in latex, toothpaste, jam or other food, and can also be used as mordant for dyeing and color printing.
Benzoic acid can be used in industrial chemical synthesis.
